A review by New Jersey’s attorney has concluded that New York police violated no state laws by conducting secret surveillance on Muslims at mosques and businesses, according to news reports.

Update at 5:23 p.m. ET: The New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations said in an e-mailed statement that it is “disappointed” by the attorney general’s “approval of the New York Police Department’s warrantless surveillance of law-abiding Muslims.”

A CAIR-NJ representative was among American Muslim leaders who met this afternoon at Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa’s office “to discuss concerns about the widespread spying,” the statement said. Also attending were officials from the New Jersey State Police, the Department of Homeland Security and the Joint Terrorism Task Force.

Original post: New York police did not violate any New Jersey laws by secretly watching Muslims in the state, according to a review by Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa, the Newark Star-Ledger is reporting.

Chisea was scheduled to meet with New Jersey Muslim leaders this afternoon in Trenton to provide details of the three-month review. Unnamed officials in the AG’s office briefed the Star-Ledger on the findings, which have not yet been released.

The New York Police Department has been briefed already.

Though the review found that no civil or criminal laws were broken, the state will announce an agreement with the NYPD to hold regular meetings — at least monthly — to “strengthen the lines of communication.”

The Star-Ledger also writes that the attorney general is establishing an outreach committee with the Muslim community, and that he will issue “a general directive today to all state law enforcement agencies that will put in place new notification protocols that will be triggered when they learn of any law enforcement activity being conducted by out-of-state policy agencies within their jurisdiction.”

The Associated Press, which revealed the surveillance program, has more details.

The U.S. Justice Department is still conducting a review. In March, Attorney General Eric Holder told a Senate subcommittee that news reports of police spying on Muslims at mosques and businesses were “disturbing.”
